Abuela Doulas

Training birthworkers who can be trusted with the people who need them most

Abuela Doulas is the UK's first Black-owned and led doula training organisation. Since 2017, founder Mars Lord and her team have trained birth and postnatal doulas with justice as the framework that everything runs through: how they teach, what they teach, and how they hold space.

Birthwork is not neutral. Every room a birthing person walks into carries history, and every decision made around their body carries power. Abuela Doulas trains birthworkers to see that, to spot harm and not repeat it, and to build a practice that lasts.

What Abuela Doulas offers

• Birth doula training, in person in London and online over six evenings

• Postnatal doula training (Postnatal Sankofa), open to anyone

• Anti-racism training for birthworkers

• A directory of graduates, so families can find them

• A cohort that stays with you after training, so you don't start out alone

Training is built for Black and Brown birthworkers first. Check abueladoulas.co.uk for upcoming dates.

Why we work together

Abuela Doulas graduates leave ready to take on clients. Then the admin starts: enquiries, contracts, invoices, appointments, care notes and on-call dates. DoulaOne was built to hold those details so birthworkers can stay focused on the families they support.

I'm really impressed. Easy to set up, and help was on hand if I needed it. Looking back to the start of my doula journey, this would have been a game changer."
