Birth Doula Course
a big big THANK YOU. Since completing the course, I have been facilitating groups for parents with pre crawlers, where we talk about birth and we just hold each other during these first few months, I’ve also had amazing experiences working postnatally with individual families and single parents, my clients have been mainly black birth folk and non binary parents.
Birth Doula Course
Mars is 100% dedicated to the vision of seeing the next generation of birthworkers of colour rise.
She has been such an inspiration and champion of my practice and learning.
I signed up because I could see that she genuinely wanted to see doulas rise together collectively, that it wasn't about your ego but about helping us to the be the best that we could be so that we could support ALL families in their journey to parenthood.
Birth Doula course
So grateful for the way you taught us to ask questions and get them to do the work in the same way you've done for us. Had you realised you were transferring from doula-ing at the birth of babies to doula-ing the birth of doulas when you started running the Abuela courses?
Birth Doula Course
I thought your Post Sankofa Course was absolutely brilliant. It was really informative. Considering it was all done online & not face to face I thought it really worked well.
Both you & Lorna were able to engaged with myself & the other ladies really well.
I learnt so much from everyone’s experiences. The course made me really think about the whole aspect of postpartum care, that would probably would have never entered my mind before now. It made me really think about my own experience & what I would change if I could go back & do it all over again. Also moving forward what I would like to do when I start my doula work.
Yourself, Lorna & all the other ladies really made me feel empowered and capable of doing so much more.
I have not done any form of studying in about 8yrs. I was really nervous to start. But once I started I felt so at ease. Both you & Lorna were very approachable. Your teaching technique is fabulous.
The reading material has been extremely interesting. Thank you for the books.
I felt that the course covered a lot of areas my brain was very well nourished. provoking my thoughts to think outside the box.
I’ve told friends & family about this course I would definitely recommend this course to others who may be thinking about becoming a Doula.
I am soooo grateful for the opportunity that you have given me. Thank you for believing in me. I look forward to showing you what I’ve done in the new year.
I wish could give you a big hug. Thanks again.
Postnatal Sankofa course
I absolutely loved this Postnatal Sankofa course it is filled with so much information. The tutors are fantastic, so honest and open. My tutors Mars and Lorna really gave me food for thought. I loved the group of ladies I was studying with. Everyone is so supportive and understanding. We all learnt something from one another, sharing our own experiences in a safe place. I didn’t know what to expect from the course as it was going to be on Zoom. (As the last time I studied was over ten years ago in classroom filled with people) The course touched on every subject in regards to becoming a Doula for example- nourishing food, boundaries, breast feeding, advocating, relationships and so much more. The reading material provided was so beneficial to my learning. I learnt so much and gained priceless knowledge from this course. I felt it was a very safe place to learn not just for me but for everyone involved.
Postnatal Sankofa course
My name is Chloe. I recently did the birth prep course with Abuela Doulas. I chose to do it with Abuela Doulas because I'd been following on social media for a while. I'd been umming and ahhing, but I wanted the full package as such. I wanted to get the cultural side of it. I wanted to make sure I'd covered all bases as such and had a rounded course where I could support all types of people through birth and postnatal. I was surprised at how much I was made to think and do the work for myself, which maybe sounds silly, but I wasn't just given the information. It was something that I really had to think about and it was something we worked a lot on, what it meant for ourselves and our journey and things like that, which I think was really, really important and something I'll really take with me. I tell people often about when they asked me how was the course. I tell them that actually it really cemented in me those thoughts and desires to be a doula, and it made those doubts vanish, which was really, really good. I'm going to be a doula who will hold a safe space for people and let them relax and just be with them throughout that journey. Thanks so much.
Birth Doula course
I became an Abuela Doula because I had followed Mars for a great deal of time. Leading up to inquiring about the course, and she'd always been the Beyonce of doulas for me. Many of, you know, if you know me that I am obsessed with Beyonce and I'll just leave it there, so I enquired with Mars about the opportunity. And after speaking with her, I knew that that was the right course for me. I wanted to support black and brown, birthing people, and have a greater understanding of our history and culture. And I looked at numerous other do the courses, and this was the one that resonated with me, we've created a great Village of
Doulas, I'm still in contact with everybody. I done the course with and it's been an amazing experience up until now. Who was I? Before I was a semi confident business owner. Now, The Confident birth worker and I aspire to follow Mars’ example, and continue to support the village, grow the village, and just spread awareness, and under understanding, and keep advocating for those that need it. Most of all, thank you for the opportunity.
Birth Doula course
I completed my Abuela birth prep training course last year.
What I loved about the abuela course, was that it was really accessible and went to the pace that suited me and my learning style. The cohorts were small and intimate meaning that we received quality training and were able to interact without feeling overwhelmed by a sea of others.
One thing I loved about the course was the depth of cultural knowledge, learning about our own historic and current day, cultural traditions, as well as those of other cultures.
The course also looked at the race divide within the health sector and challenged us as new doulas to look at some of the ways we could close that gap. For me it is also filtered through into other areas, such as disability, sexuality, and gender identity allowing me to see where I could improve my own practices. In these areas to be more aware, more knowledgeable and more accessible. Another thing I loved about the training Mars and her guest host provided was the inclusivity around the teaching of subjects.
The language used didn't detract from the teachings of the wise, women, and their ancestral traditions and teachings. It did however enable me to utilise and adapt these traditions and teachings into my modern-day Doula practice to suit my clients and their families, intersectionally, I'm forever grateful to Mars for developing such a brilliant Birth Prep course, my cohort of fellow Abuelitas and Abuelitx are fantastic. And I know I have a family in them forever.
Birth Doula course
I realized I wanted to be a doula as I was Keen to find a doula to support my pregnancy Journey. But I was surprised by how hard it was to find a Black or brown doula near me. I spoke with a friend who was a doctor and they recommended Mars after seeing more speak at an event and I looked at the umbrella Doula website and knew I wanted to take part in the preparation course because the courses are inclusive and whilst they celebrate and teach you about how to support and protect all births. There is a great emphasis on doing just that black and brown families.
Is during a pandemic. I wasn't working. I couldn't invest in the course, and I knew it was my calling literally a day at later. I saw a post that Mars has put up about scholarship and I would normally just talked myself out of doing something like this, but I applied and won a scholarship. This not only covered the cost of the course. I received an array of books. A number of mentoring sessions with an experienced Doula and on top of that, I had the opportunity to study with.
With some amazing people who are now a new and extended family before the course, I would say that I felt like I didn't have a true sense of direction. And the course not only teaches you all, you need to know about pregnancy and childbirth, but there's a big part of it that requires you to research, your own birth journey and that of your ancestors and by doing this, you automatically have to look within peel back layers. And for me, I found the process really cathartic and
Therapeutic and I felt like a new person after I now know what I want to do and who I want to be. And I'm a spiritual annalistic, healer and herbalist. And Doula, I would highly recommend the course, and if you want to be a birth worker get in touch with Mars, I've learned so much and the course has allowed me to pursue something that I am truly passionate about. Thank you.
Birth Doula course
I started the abuela Doula course in September, 2020. I'm a stay-at-home mom who has multiple sclerosis. I've had multiple sclerosis since 2013. I applied for this post as a scholarship. I saw it advertising. And I thought to myself. Hmm. Can I do this? Cause so I did a little research and I loved what I saw. So I applied for my scholarship.
It was nice to being taught by black women who really want to empower you and show you the way. The course is not wishy-washy is very factual. It gives you opportunities to interact with others. I learnt a lot. In all areas Doula from breastfeeding, chest, feeding nutritional foods that help you with healing and cultural awareness, female anatomy regarding childbirth, your emotions, how to sign post boundaries just to name a few and
So family Dynamics at times. I got a bit emotional as I realize how much I missed out during my own postpartum period Journey. The course has room to allow individuals to come up with their own ideas on as to how to help birthing people. After the course. It made me really want to invest my time in helping moms with chronic illness. Just like myself during their postpartum period. I think that I could be really helpful to them. The course helps. You get a plan ideas budgeting process planning record-keeping. It has mentors which you can use which is really helpful and encouraging moving forward. I have started my own business which I work around my family, my life and my Ms. Also, I have joined neighborhood doulas, which is a voluntary, do the service. I'm so grateful to have been given the opportunity to do this, cause I would highly recommend it to others. If becoming a doula is something they want to do
Birth Doula course
Mars has a way of breaking down your habitual thought process into its component parts (which she does quite sneakily and subtly I think), so as to reveal to you where it is you keep tripping yourself up with some kind of a panic mode or fabrication. The process is held with lots of kindness, and some tough love

You were incredible at BMHCUK today and I loved the very unapologetic way in which you said what you had to say. Look forward to hearing you speak again.

May I thank you very much for an extremely valuable set of study days and I have received some very good feedback from many that have attended. I hope that we can in the future arrange for some further days so that other staff will be able to benefit in a positive way.

Coaching with Mars is not for the faint hearted, and that's why I chose to coach with her. Mars doesn't stand for my brain's BS, and if your brain likes to put up a good fight then in Mars you have the perfect sparring partner. She is brilliant at bringing concepts to life with analogies that are so helpful in then applying what we coach on in real life. I found myself saying at random times "what would Mars say..?" a sign that your coach is always on your side and by your side. The biggest takeaway from my time with Mars is the importance of celebrating what I do. I've never been in the habit of appreciating myself for all I get done in pursuit of my goals. It's a small thing, but huge it helps me quickly step off of the struggle bus and onto the fast train to success. Thanks Mars!

thanks so much for the amazing training last week. There is lots for me to continue to reflect and work on - it was such a brilliant day and so good to be able to immerse and also to speak safely in an environment of support and challenge. I have recommended to everyone in the team (I've also recommended the MCHC lunch!!). I am also really grateful for the wonderful contacts I made on the day with whom I'm looking forward to following up in the coming weeks. It's a huge honour to feel that I might be considered safe and trustworthy to speak to.

"Mars Lord was just cited as like the authority on twins on my hypnobirthing course - loved it!"
The most beautiful thing about training with abuela doulas is that it remains a family, you don't get left alone or forgotten about you remain as part of the one big family and you get to have a regular meet up virtual meetups with everybody that's trained with abuela doula and you form a tight-knit, family. And you form so many sisterhood's and friendships and
that loving environment, gives you the ability to kind of grow a lot more love inside of yourself, so you can give it out to the family is that you're going to support when you become a doula, or if you're already doing it, it increases that love. So to anybody. And to everyone that's listening to my testimonial, I'd say Abuela Doulas it is the best place to train. It's, it's not just a training.
It's a place of Love is a Sacred Circle. It's family. It's a lot of things that words cannot express and I'm so thankful that I had the opportunity to train with abuela dealers and be a part of the family. So thank you so much - thank you. So then the ladies that I trained with and thank you to all the sisters that I have met through the
Is virtual meetups sending so much love.
Peace.
Yeah, the most of the most memorable part I would say for me, was the day that I shared my own birth story and that was the first time I would say I had ever sort of spoken about it. Publicly spoken about what I enjoyed during birth and what had happened. And all of that stuff, and that was the first time that I literally Broke down and cried and, That was just an amazing feeling because there was so much that I needed to release at that time and
The way, Mars has held space, and the way the team held space during that training, made it so much special. It made it so much beautiful, and it made it made me feel so loved, and that's what you get. When you train with the Abuela doulas, you don't just get training, you get love, you get care, you get support, you get a Sisterhood, you get friendship. And so,
things I could list so many things in the list goes on and on but
This is why, I mean I'm so thankful that I didn't train anywhere else that I chose, and I stuck by abuela dealers from learning. You learn so much even from the pre-course module even to create in your manual. And even during the post course, module, you learn so much about yourself and all I know is one. All I know is that this whole training is taking me on a whole other journey. In terms of discovering, my ancestry discovering so much more about myself and also wanting to learn a lot more and
So, what when I found, what I was looking for, I decided to sign up for the birth of prep course, which I could not even put into words. What that course meant for me as a person before I did. This course, I was just a long-lost lip. Oh, so lovely. It was so I'd say trying to find their way into the Work World of birthing worth of work but keeping and then I do
Do this cause and then that's it. Like, I've just feel like I've transformed into a new person. I feel like a butterfly.
When I can't even put into words what, this course means to me, but I'm going to try my absolute best to do so. So when you train with Mars, just know that, you know, you will feel uncomfortable at times, but uncomfortable in a good way because it it's a way of you sort of growing and seeing your potential and seeing who you are. And actually,
Discovering yourself and I feel like I did that and that happened to me whilst I was training with Mars and the team that we were training with, it was just amazing and I learnt so much from it. I really did learn so much and there's one thing that I'll never forget that happened during the training which was the time where we are.
We got to share our different birth in experiences and when it got to my turn, honestly, I really didn't know what was going to happen. What I was going to expect. What I was going to say is it's nice listening to other people's stories and you warm in the sort of your kind of feeling.

Thanks again for an amazing day training the other week. Huge amounts to think about and to continue to work on; I'm really grateful for the wonderful contacts I made on the day and I'll be following up with them[ after Christmas]. It's an honour to feel that I might be considered safe and trustworthy to speak to. [Birthrights]

I can only recommend this programme. Mars and the Glorious Ten hold space for you so you can look at your life, and they all cheer you on while you’re implementing the changes you want to make. Learning all the tools from Mars and having her guide you in this process is truly invaluable!
Glorious Ten - coaching for birthworkers
I trained with Abuela Doulas in May 2021 21. So, I began my Doula Journey at a roughly around 2014 and I've had so many different sort of careers. I've had different choices that I've made in my life and just sort of traveling and going away for a couple of years and then coming back.
To this whole new mindset was just phenomenal for me. So I was in the midst of the of deciding. What do I want to do with my career? What do I want to do with myself now? And what happened was I was having a conversation with one of my friends and she said to me, you know, Aisha? I shall? I think you're going to be an amazing Doula. So when she mentioned that, I decided to sort of go on the internet, going to Google and
Find any do to sort of trade in that I could find and just sort of sign up for it and then train to become a doula. So, one day, I happened to be on my Instagram and then I came across ABuela Doulas duelist and I was like, wow, what's this? Let me have a look. So, I had to look, I loved what I saw. And at that time I had already sort of booked not really secured my place with
a different doula training company and I quickly decided that, you know what, I want to train with those people. I want to train with Abuela Doulas The reason why I wanted to train with the ABuela Doulas is because I just sort of saw everything that I saw Within Myself, it reflected, everything that I stood for everything that I believed in, and everything that I basically has been instilled into me
Birth Doula course
Gosh. What did I get from the course just so much information and guidance and signposting. I feel like my brain has just been taken and like opened up you know my eyes have been opened up. There's just so many different areas that I want to look into to understand more and to know more about pregnancy and birth and postnatal care.
Um and that's been just brilliantly, sign posted by Mars and team that produced all the resources and Lorna obviously as well. And I have also just been given so much more of a push and impetus to do the work because we've just had such supportive informed authentic and fierce leadership by Mars and it's, it's
it's just
It's so powerful to have that because you know I trust her I trust the work that she's doing I trust her intentions and so for me as a doula training with her, it just feels like, okay, if that's what she's bringing, and that's how she's leading. Then I want to be that I want to be part of something that is that Focus, that determined, that unwavering, and that powerful, because there's so much work that we need to do in this space to protect and
Poor and preserve the lives of black and brown body. Women who are five times more likely to die in child birth. And so I've just I've got I've been lit. Well no, I haven't been lit. My fire has just been given more fuel and that's pretty powerful in addition. I've just been inducted into such a powerful community of doulas who were generous kind and just sharing so much with me. Powerful,
Birth Doula course
I attended the study day hosted by Mars because I want to pragmatically change my practice to make Black & Brown women feel safe in my care to bring positive action in maternity services. The session taught me the importance of listening and guided me in using my privilege positively whilst remaining respectful that the narrative is not mine. My plan moving forward is to protect my black and brown colleagues by speaking up for them when needed, and not accepting poor care both medical and cultural.
Cultural Safety Workshop
I recently completed the Abuela Doula birth course and I've just wanted to give a testimonial to really help other people know how amazing the course is and how great Mars is and how educated and empowered, although short qualities, that phrase and Powerful. I now feel in my path to becoming the do that I want to be and I chose Abuela because I purposely wanted to work with a collective who were active in their advocacy. I'm very open and proud talk about.
Abuela recognises different, intercepting factors that birthing people come into the birth space with where that be about gender sexuality, ethnicity disability, body size. How important it is to recognize all those things and have every single person feel like they are fully seen heard and held through their birth journey and not every doula course is willing to do that. You see some courses and people are still very much of the world.
The same. We're going through the same situation scenario. I don't think that we were in that place anymore. Hopefully. So that's why I chose Abuela Doulas for their clear advocacy and their statement about particularly wanting to support black and brown body people through their breath experience. The course itself was beautiful and personal and uplifting emotional, and educating. And it also helped me to connect with other like-minded. Beautiful people who
He to be supportive and thoughtful and helpful in my journey to become the best birth work if I can possibly be. So yeah, I just wanted to say all of that and a massive, thank you to Mars and to abuela. And I really hope to do more of their courses to continue deep in my practice and exploring the different facets of what makes
A helpful successful, birth worker.
Birth Doula course
I decided to do the Abuela course after doing, Mars’ reproductive Justice retreat. And because I wanted to level up and go deeper into Doula work and into the cultural safety aspect of do the work,
Now yes, what surprised me and didn't surprise me at the same time. It's the depth of the work and going reflecting and to also look forward and too.
Two men in the group of people that I was with was very special. So what I got from the course, is courage, confidence and comradery, so courage to be myself and not to look around at the others and think, or not like this, I'm not like that. Confidence, to be me in the journey going forward, and the people were very special and my course. And remain will remain very close friends, when a WhatsApp group, two years later, still encouraging each other, and
The votes in each other's achievements, I picked the course because I wanted to really focus on cultural safety aspect and I really like the way that Mars does her courses. So I thought that was the right one for me.
I before I think I was very much higher than everywhere. So doing Mars's course, really helped me to get refined and defined like refined, what I'm doing where and and refine away, all the bits that needed to come away and Define where I'm going. Which is Always a Learning Journey. I think I'm more settled having done the course. And I really know where I'm going in my own private Global Doula work and working with neighborhood doulas in the community. So I'm grateful for my abuela community.

Choosing Abuela Doula for my UKDoula Training was the best decision I could have made. Mars is an incredible educator, coach and is extremely knowledgeable and experienced. Highly recommend Abuela Doulas course, especially if you want to learn to stand on your own two feet as a doula. Mars takes you as you come, shapes you into the doula you were always meant to be. She softly challenges you, to make sure think for yourself and answer your questions so you are actively learning. You won't be spoon-fed, but you'll be supported, encouraged and taught to fly! Training with Abuela Doulas has been one of the most enriching, affirming and empowering experiences of my life. Mars holds space with such wisdom, compassion and humor that you feel both deeply supported and challenged to grow. The Rooted Course was so incredible!! I left every session feeling seen, inspired and more confident. Mars also creates a learning environment that is inclusive and culturally aware. I truly feel like I have gained not just the skills to be a doula but also a super supportive community and mentor to encourage me along my journey. Rooted: Become A Birthkeeper
This course is 'breaking' my brain. I am literally going through a period of unlearning and it's wonderful.
Rooted: Become A Birthkeeper
Training with Mars has not only given me a deeper understanding of the work that I do with an awareness of intersectionality, my own strengths and weaknesses, it has also given me another family who have my back no matter what.

The Abuela Doula course was an amazing experience that deepened my knowledge about pregnancy and birth. The training was comprehensive, culturally grounded, and gave me the confidence and tools to support families with great care. Everyone I trained alongside was full of love and incredibly supportive. I highly recommend this course to anyone looking to become a doula.
Rooted: Become A Birthkeeper
I have just finished my training with Abuela Doulas! I am a trained midwife and felt very grateful to be welcomed into Mars' inclusive, loving, challenging and insightful Doula learning space. My goal was to improve my understanding of Doula care and continue my learning to be more culturally safe. I got all of this but I got so much more, I was undoing my assumptions, learning new ways to show up for my clients and expanding my thinking about birth and postnatal care. Not only this, but I have been welcomed into the most supportive, safe, wholesome community. I am a queer, trans person myself and Mars was the best facilitator of a learning space that I've had so far for making me feel included and at ease. If you are looking for inclusive Doula training which is anti-racist and queer and trans safe at its core then this is the one.

Abuela Doulas is an amazing UK doula training organisation offering inclusivity informed doula courses. Mars Lord is awesome, approachable and encouraging whilst challenging me to face and tackle my pre conceived discriminatory ideas and biases and societal pressures that increase them. I have attended the Level Up Doula course and several short courses with Abuela Doulas and highly recommend them.
Level Up Doula course
"Having Mars with us during the labour meant we felt calm, confident and didn't ever feel the situation was getting scary or out of control - she also helped us ask the right questions and consider our options as the labour progressed. She also helped me breast feed the twins immediately after the birth and even though I ended up having a c-section, we have really positive memories of the whole experience and we are certain this was helped by Mars being there with us."

Attending the Abuela Doula training was a transformative experience. I had the most incredible experience after choosing to do my Doula Training with Abuela Doulas, led by Mars. As someone who knew Mars personally, I specifically chose this training because I didn't want to be guided by anyone else and it was completely the right decision.
Mars' approach is deeply personal, where I felt connected to something bigger within whis work and empowered. The training was transformative in ways I didn't even anticipate.
Thank you, Mars, for such an amazing experience!
Birth Doula course
Mars has a way of holding space that allows everyone to show up as their authentic selves, in safety and in love. I came away knowing I have what it takes to be a doula as well as feeling more connected to my cultural heritage, a result worth far more than the investment asked. I would highly recommend this training in particular if you feel the call to birth work. Truly inclusive practice is the only way forward and is urgently needed. This way of working can be embodied but only if it is present at the roots of a training, which is why I choose Abuela Doulas.
Birth Doula course
Mars is the perfect combination of arse kicker and cheerleader. Reminding me of the importance of celebrating my achievements and to stop downplaying them. Challenging me to move beyond my discomfort which was keeping me stuck, and allowing me to expand my belief in myself.

Coaching with Mars helped me with getting unstuck on a project I had been wanting to work on for a long time. She helped me unpack mental blocks and remove obstacles and even get out of my own way. Seeing the mental blocks mirrored back really helped me to overcome them. I’ve since made lots of progress on a task that I thought was far too big and I am now enjoying working on it.

Mars lights up every room she walks into. She's brought up 5 amazing children on her own, while doing an Open University degree in English Literature - something she always wanted to do but was told at school that "girls like her don't do things like that." She's a doula, supporting women through childbirth, and she heads an organisation that supports birthworkers of colour. She also finds time to channel her love of theatre into unpaid support for not one but two theatre companies, including one which trains young people who are in need of confidence. She's constantly on the lookout to bring people together who can connect and lift each other up. Outspoken, open-minded and endlessly generous, Mars gets no recognition for all that she gives - but the number of lives she's impacted is countless.
